John Hartman and his family moved from San Diego to Oklahoma after the raging wildfires destroyed their home in 2007. The family also lost their 2-year-old black Labrador Retriever when the scared dog escaped the backyard.
A vehicle passing by opened its door, and Buddy jumped right in. That was the last time Hartman and his family saw Buddy for nearly a decade.
Amazingly, they recently received a phone call from the Department of Animal Services while visiting their son in San Diego. Their long lost dog had been found running loose in the Imperial Beach neighborhood of San Diego.
Buddy was taken to Gaines Street Animal Shelter, where his microchip was scanned. Hartman and his wife were reunited with Buddy on April 1.
“I was pretty shocked … when we called his name, he came for us,” Hartman said.
Buddy is now settling into life in Oklahoma, where his owners are thrilled to have their missing dog back. The mystery still remains of where Buddy has been since 2007.
“It would be interesting to find out what his odyssey was at 6 1/2 years, but I guess we’ll never know,” Hartman said.
