Big Cat Week on National Geographic WILD runs from Sunday, December 11th through December 17th.  Big Cat Week is a part of National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative, a long-term commitment to halt the decline of these iconic animals in the wild, which are disappearing at alarming rates.  Big Cat Week will showcase visually stunning and powerfully resonant stories of nature’s fiercest felines and the people working to save these majestic cats.  This year’s premieres include programs from Dereck and Beverly Joubert, award-winning filmmakers and National
Geographic Explorers-in-Residence; wildlife naturalist Casey Anderson; and expert big cat wrangler Boone Smith, a fourth-generation tracker and houndsman.

I previewed Joubert’s film, The Last Lions, with friends and we all enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to seeing the whole series!

Here’s a clip from Stalking the Mountain Lion which will run tomorrow at 8pm on 12/11/11. As beautiful as these animals are it’s a good reminder that they are predators. I’ve seen that look in my cat’s eye when he has decided to stalk me, and I’m just grateful that in those moments my cat is not the size of one of these guys:
